Project Statement

Off The Map

In this work, I studied a room in my first London flat through the assembly of twenty-eight 4” x 5” paper collages. Believing that being at home was newsworthy, I set out to create postcards made of old historical world maps that I had found among still-life props at Wellesley College - the maps were once used to teach history to the students of Wellesley. I cut up the found material into shapes of colour, and based on an observational sketch of the room, I compiled the works. Despite the collages’ modest size, with fractions of the maps clearly preserved and readable, I aimed to indicate scale, distance, and depth: an image of a room could contain the whole world.
